The magic of photography lies in its ability to freeze moments in time, regardless of the weather. In today’s blog I will be preparing you for a photography session in cold weather. It is so important to dress appropriately to ensure Kids are both comfortable and warm. Dressing appropriately will help lead to beautiful photos.

Once the time changes the cold weather soon follows. When your family session is outside it is important to be mindful of the temperatures. I tell all of my families to go outside the day before your session at the same time of your session. If you are comfortable for an hour during this time you are dressed appropriately. If you are not consider, adding layers. Columbus, Ohio is known for having all seasons in one day. As your Columbus, Ohio family Photographer I want you to feel confident and comfortable.

The are 3 main points to layering. Base, Insulating and outer layer. A base layer such as merino wool or a thermal fabric helps regulate your body temp and wicks moisture away. Tights, wool socks add a layer of cuteness and warmth.  An insulating layer retains your body’s heat. Full length sweater,  fleece or thermal sweater. The outer layer is best for shielding your body from the elements. Think mittens, hats or scarves.

Kids: add chunky sweaters over dresses/under overalls, over flannels and let the flannel pop out, long socks with shoes, cute neutral or fun color stocking hat, complimenting coat.

Little ones- could put tights on under pants(for a little unseen layer), same for shirts under sweaters. Cute neutral mittens!

Dads: add layers. Example- tee shirt + flannel + shacket type button up or jean jacket type coat

Moms: add a chunky sweater over dress, add a long coat that brings a fun complimenting pattern or neutral color, or add a blanket type shaw.

Full family, cream blanket to snuggle in!

1. When putting together your outfits, I typically recommend the woman or mom picks her outfit first. And then build the rest of the family outfits around it.
2. I find it helps to give my kids two outfit options to choose between so we avoid a power struggle. This has worked liked a charm for me! Especially when kids hit 3 and 4 years old and start to have big opinions about what they wear.
3. Try and look at what you already have in your closet – especially when picking the man or dad’s outfit. Do they already have a nice pair of khakis they can use? Maybe find one new item like a turtleneck or shacket to mix it up!
4. Make sure everyone is comfortable – it’s hard to get comfortable in front of a camera if you don’t feel good in what you’re wearing ❤️
